This is Not the End

This is the way the world ends, not with a bang but a whimper.

– T.S. Eliot

As of this morning, my employer has moved to a “work from home” status – something for which my coworkers and I have been advocating over the past few years. No one could have imagined we’d finally get our wish under such dire (and frankly frightening) circumstances.

Still, we all fired up our laptops today, connected to the company VPN, and got down to business.

Life, in the midst of a global pandemic is carrying on. There are still deadlines to be met, quotas that need to be achieved. There are still customers who depend on us.

Eventually, the spread of the virus will ebb. Unfortunately, the impacts on our economies and communities may be longer lasting. We may see businesses we’ve frequented fail; we may see vast changes in the ways we travel or view our own healthcare systems. With so much uncertainty, it’s far too easy to get wrapped up in the worst-case scenario “what if” round table discussions on social media.

As the daily COVID-19 infection rates and death tolls rise, it’s my hope that instead of wallowing in fear, we will begin to come together – and not just as a country, but as one world.

It’s in times like these that we see the triumph of the human spirit. We see neighbors helping neighbors. We see strangers become life-long friends. We see the generosity of those who have little as they give to those who have none.

So, while the media is focusing on brawls over toilet paper rolls, look to ways you can be of service to your neighborhood and community. Look to ways you can make a difference. Let the true beauty of humanity shine.

COVID-19 won’t be our end. Humanity has not yet reached its darkest hour.

Choose to be the light.
